Nelson's Bipolar Power Supply
A bipolar power supply originally designed for the F5M but suitable for other projects. Includes PCBs, all components, and mounting hardware.
- 1 x Power Supply PCB: Dimensions - 4 ¾" x 5 ½" / 121mm x 140mm
- 1 x AC Connection PCB: Dimensions - 1 ⁷⁄₁₆" x 1 ⁷⁄₁₆" / 37mm x 37mm
- 12 x 4700uf capacitors
- 1 x 3300pF X1 rated capacitor
- 2 x Rectifier bridges
- 6 x Thermistors
- 7 x Spacers
- 7 x Screws (6-32 x ⅝")
- 7 x Nuts (6-32)
I bought 2 bi-polar power supplies to build a F5m in dual mono configuration. They are very easy to apply and are versatile because of their limited height. They could have been stagged but decided to put them next to one another after putting the torodials straight up. The connection PCB was helpful to connect the transformers to the mains, coming from a soft-start module.
I connected LEDs to the boards and mounted those on top to leave the front in one piece.
The sound: after 2 ACA amps in bridge mode and an ACA Mini, I wanted something more beavy. That sure as hell worked. Compared to my Naim NAC 250 DR, it sounds more immersive and musical. It doesn’t handle complex music as well as the Naim but it’s perfect for Jazz and Classical music. The amp turned out super quite as well on 91 db sensitive speakers.
Very happy with the total package.
This is my second (and third!) PSU kit. I built one for an F5m several months ago, and have just built a dual-mono supply for an Aleph Jzm. I really appreciate the recently-added power-entry hookup boards, which saves having to put together a termination block for the capacitor and thermistor connections.
Even though this PSU seems to be marketed for the F5m, I can confirm that it's a great choice for the Aleph Jzm, and I plan to use this dual-mono PSU chassis to try out other FW amps. See my build thread for more details at https://www.diyaudio.com/community/threads/dual-psu-build-in-mini-dissipante-3u-400mm-for-f5m-f4-m2x-aleph-jzm.420582/
Thank you so much for your service.I used two power supplies in a dual mono configuration and the results are audibly fabulous, its by far the best amplifier I own on an outright performance per $ spent ever.
There is a build guide but I didn't find a link to it from either the store page or the F5M build guide. After that it was an easy build and worked first time. Results from the amp+psu are very good,
I'm very happy with this kit. I'm using it with an F5m and there are no problems at all. My only comment is that I have not been able to find a schematic online that matches the version of the board that I received.
OK.
