In this iteration of Zen Mod's popular Iron Pre the “SMD” is a play on words. Aleks designed the circuit with Toshiba 2SK2145 to replace the obsolete J170/J74 pairs. No SMD soldering is required! Each board comes with the JFETs pre-matched and pre-installed.
I’m biased, of course, but I think the Iron Pre is incredible. I’m thrilled that 100s of other people seem to think so too.
We have both essentials kits and supplementary parts kits available. The essentials kit comes with the PCBs, the CineMag transformers, and all the active devices. The supplementary kit comes with all the rest of the parts to stuff the main PCB(s) and other key items to complete your project. You’ll need a chassis, power transformer(s), your choice of attenuation (volume control), and a few other odds and ends.
You can purchase kits through the Iron Pre Project Page and we have a total of 6 offering to suit your building needs:
- Single-Ended Essentials
- Single-Ended Supplemental
- Single-Ended Bundle
- Balanced Essentials
- Balanced Supplemental
- Balanced Bundle
Modushop / HiFi2000 has excellent custom chassis specifically for the Iron Pre.
Jim Tiemann, 6L6, has posted the build guide for the SE version, and he’s working on the balanced guide. Aleks, 6L6 and other experts are always helping out as needed in the diyAudio community if you have any questions or need a helping hand.
Happy Building,
